#Review – Homeland

This is my new favorite show. No questions asked, Homeland kicks some serious ass. I have a lot of good shows on my to watch list, Dexter, American Horror Story, The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, Revenge… Do you see a pattern here? I love drama. I feed from it. Not only do I watch these shows because they’re highly entertaining, but also, they inspire me. Funny I write fantasy and paranormal stories, but watch tons of thrillers. Well… I read fantasy, and paranormal though. I think the thrillers give me this sense of urgency I want to convey in my writing. Always on the edge, I want to drive the reader crazy, make him/her fall in love for tormented characters and crave their ultimate redemption, just like a great TV series.

I’m not into terrorism usually – shows like 24 or Sleeper Cell were alright for me to watch, but not my cup of tea. Homeland completely changed my state of mind. Claire Danes’s acting is phenomenal. The plot, the writing, the acting, the rhythm of every episode makes me go mad. I can’t say it enough, this show is so good, it makes me sick.

So check it out, even if you don’t have Showtime, the episodes are online. You won’t regret spending twelve hours straight watching the first season.

This is gold.

#CoffinHop2012 – GET READY!

COFFIN HOP is the annual Horror Author event, geared towards gaining exposure for indie horror and genre authors, and increasing interaction with fans and readers. Conceived in 2011 by authors Axel Howerton and Julie Jansen, COFFIN HOP was initially intended to be a small answer to the proliferation of author blog hops for Romance, Erotica and other genres while noticing a dearth of well-organized, high profile events for horror writers.

The first annual COFFIN HOP bloomed to over 100 authors and brought in thousands of readers and fans over the week leading up to Halloween. Every one of those 100 authors held contests, gave away e-books, paperbacks, prize packages, autographed copies, toys, personalized writings, videos, themed jewellery, movie posters… the list goes on and on and on.

This year, we want to take COFFIN HOP to a whole new level. In addition to the week-long event (running October 24-31, 2012), we will be releasing a collection of some of the best stories from our best author-members. (The anthology has been pushed back, but keep an eye out for new and exciting news and events and updates on the new release date for the book!) Exclusive to our collection COFFIN HOP 2012: DEATH BY DRIVE-IN are stories from C.W LaSart (Ad Nauseum), Red Tash (Troll or Derby, This Brilliant Darkness), Jessica McHugh (Rabbits in the Garden, Torn Realities), Dan Dillard (Demons and Other Inconveniences), Erik Gustafson (Fall Leaves and the Black Dragon) and many more.  Mad B-Movie tales of Drive-In derivation, including: Brains from Space! Robot Squids Gone Wild! Radioactive Microwave Men! Monster Mash Massacres! Crotch Tentacles! Pinterest-loving Werewolves! Vampire Seduction! Man-eating Toilet! Robot Lincoln & Zombie Jackson! Interior art by Nicolas Caesar! Foreword by Stink of Flesh director Scott S. Phillips! Cover by the infamous Chris Dow and www.eyecravepro.ca

The best part is, all profits from COFFIN HOP 2012: DEATH BY DRIVE-IN will be donated to www.readingtree.org to help encourage literacy.

You can help us cover the costs of editing, formatting and publishing by visiting our official COFFIN HOP store for all your COFFIN HOP merchandise!

American Horror Story – New Season, New Horror?

One of my guilty pleasures – and I have many – is to read and watch horror stories. I’ve always looked for THE story that would freak me out so much, I wouldn’t sleep at night.

When I was a kid, there was this show on television called Round The Twist – IMDB it if you’ve never seen it. At eight years old, my imagination wasn’t as crazy as it is today, but I was easily impressionable. Books I read, and TV shows I watched gave me many ideas and fueled many of my nightmares.

Round the Twist – an awesome show – did a perfect job to scare the heck out of me. Every episode traumatized me to the core and to this day, I’m trying to find a new movie or TV series that will have the same impact on me.

Have I found it?

Um. The Walking Dead is pretty cool, but it doesn’t scare me. I need more than walking corpses to keep me up at night. All the horror flicks – and I say ALL of them – don’t scare me either. I’ve tried the old ones, the new ones, the gory ones, the psychological ones, the Japanese ones (that can be also very psychological), what else is there?

In brief, I’m a jaded horror fan.

But – one show comes close to bringing me a bit of satisfaction – and it’s American Horror Story on FX. The new season just started, and as much as I loved season 1, I must admit season 2 left me hungry for more. Like I said, I’m jaded. But I’m not giving up yet. I firmly believe I can be scared.

I just need more surprises. Stuff I haven’t thought of before. Maybe I should just write a story, but maybe what scares me won’t scare anyone else.

This is really hard. Anyway, if you haven’t checked American Horror Story yet, give it a peek. And let me know what you think.

For any good suggestion of a horror flick, any comment will also be greatly appreciated. 🙂

#Serials review – Buried and Real Vampires Don’t Sparkle #CQ

Since the weather isn’t playing nice anymore, time to find great stories to entertain your winter.

I got two for you. Two serials that excite me, make me laugh, and mostly, keep me interested. I introduce to you BURIED and REAL VAMPIRES DON’T SPARKLE.

Buried by Gerilyn Marin

Blurb:

Like every resident of Fane’s Cove, Cadence McKenna knows her town is, well, odd. And yet, they’re accustomed to the near-daily supernatural happenings- so accustomed, in fact, that when Gray Addison moves to town and stays, she is shocked to find that she’s the only one who insists that there must be something strange about him.

With her life-long- if minor- psychic sensitivity handed down from her grandmother, she knows that what she feels isn’t simple paranoia.  After all, how many normal guys pay no mind to random poltergeist activity occurring right in front of them?

Cadence can’t blame anyone for wanting to ignore that there might be more to his presence there- perhaps if he is a normal guy, it’s just the first sign that whatever it is about the town that drives visitors away is fading.  She might have even grudgingly let it go, but then she sees Gray acting very suspiciously and knows that she can’t dismiss her feelings until she understands why he’s in Fane’s Cove.  Even if it means sticking her neck out by pretending to get close to him . . . and learning more about her town’s history than anyone would ever want to know.

Why I like Buried:

You tag along with Cadence on her journey down the paranormal creepiness of Fane’s Cove. She’s a teenager, so beware of mood swings – but her tone is always cheerful and mostly, she’s funny. I love the romance with Gray. He’s smart, witty, and obviously charming!

Gerilyn’s style is clean, well executed and intriguing. She keeps you on your toes, satisfies your hunger for more details without revealing too much.

So go visit Curiosity Quills if you’re up to reading Buried, available every Tuesday. I swear you won’t regret it!

Real Vampires Don’t Sparkle by Amy Fecteau

Blurb:

Matheus Taylor didn’t ask to be murdered. To be fair, the percentage of people actually asking to be murdered is probably small enough to be safely ignored, but he felt it was worth stating regardless.

His life might have been ordinary, but it was his life and he wasn’t done with it yet. Quin didn’t care. A seventeen-hundred old Roman, Quintus Livius Saturnius had a different view of morality than most people. Killing Matheus and hijacking his undead existence seemed perfectly acceptable to him.

Now, Matheus spends his nights running for his life, questioning his sexual orientation, and defying a mysterious new threat to the vampires within his city. Not that he set out to do any defying; he just wanted to be left alone.

Unfortunately, that was never going to happen.

Why I like Real Vampires Don’t Sparkle:

Well, the title got me. I don’t like Twilight and vampires usually leave me cold unless there’s something else about them I already didn’t know about. Which is hard to do since Anne Rice.

But hey, Amy managed to catch my attention, and in a good way with that! The story is crisp, the style perfectly smooth. She masters dialogs and descriptions, forcing a smile out of me more than every once in a while. I love Quin. He’s obnoxious. Freaking arrogant. Matheus ends up becoming Quin’s puppet. The interaction between the two main characters is sublime. Not too over the top, Amy Fecteau plays with the characters’ sexual orientation to perfection. Quin is gay. Matheus doesn’t know anymore. This story isn’t only about vampires. It’s about discovery, and new experiences. Matheus the newbie versus Quin the veteran.

Go check it out. It’s worth the read! On Curiosity Quills, available every Sunday!

Note to Self (174) Honey Boo Boo, Insanity, Death by Chocolate, and life in general

I have been quiet for a few days. I experienced a small meltdown, which is normal for me, but things are looking on the brighter side now. Lots has been happening. Lots I would love to talk about in detail, but I must stay patient and not spill the beans all at once. And yes, I’ll let you know as soon as I have the green light to spill all the beans. 😉

I recently started watching Honey Boo Boo on TLC. Everyone has been making fun of this show, and I guess, curiosity killed me to the point where I picked up my remote control and consciously decided to give the show a chance. Well… Episode 1 definitely threw me off my couch seat. I mean, you get the full unedited gross version of a Redneck family who literally sticks to every imaginable stereotype. South Park makes fun of people like that on a regular basis. And I’m a die hard South Park fan.

Logically then, watching Honey Boo Boo became a trip down the bowels of the earth. And I must say I love every moment of it. This is television at its worst, I know. TLC exploits this family and makes millions. Do I care? I personally think the whole concept is genius. Every episode I watch, I smile. I feel good about myself. I am entertained to the point I’m getting addicted to the whole debacle playing on my screen. This is the best thing that could have happened. And I’m not ashamed to say I’ve become a die hard Honey Boo Boo fan.

So what else do I do when I’m not following Honey Boo-Boo’s adventures? Well until recently, I’ve been watching the baseball postseason but the Nationals lost against the Cardinals and since then, I lost track of who’s gonna snatch the title. Next season the Nats get Strasburg back, so I’ve no doubt they’ll kick some ass. And no, despite living in NYC, I don’t root for the Yankees. They have enough fans, they don’t need my love.

I’m also on Week 3 of the Insanity workout. Every day I do this thing, I sweat like a maniac, and the neighbor below must hate me but do I care? NO! I feel like a champ when I do these exercises! I would never have thought I could jump so high and push so hard, but hey, everything I want comes with enough determination so I can’t complain.

Writing has been taking a lot of my time too, Death by Chocolate Volume 2 is coming out soon – please make sure to check the serial once Chapter 1 is out on www.curiosityquills.com! And yes, I’ll make announcements before Chapter 1 is released. Death by Chocolate Vol 1 will also be published as a novella around Thanksgiving. I’ll make announcements for that too. 🙂

I also did Lasik surgery a few weeks ago and boy, I like it !! 20/20 baby! I can now rock these sunglasses without the blur! 🙂

And last but not least, I added a few tattoos to my already impressive collection. Last appointment is on Friday before my guy flies to California for his new gig – which means a new vacation destination for 2013! Looking forward to starting my sleeve.

Yep, I’ve kept busy, but everything has been positive and rewarding. The best comment I got lately? The owner of the tattoo shop – and please if you live in NYC or nearby, go check Invisible Tattoo – this shop is packed with talented artists – officially welcomed me to the tattoo family, which is a pretty cool thing to say to a nerdy chick like me.

I love tattoos. I love the art world. I love my freaking life.

Peace out until further news!

Book Review – One Ghost Per Serving by Nina Post #CQ

One Ghost Per ServingOne Ghost Per Serving by Nina Post

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

So it took me quite a while to start this one. I remember getting an email asking me to kindly do a review for this novel and I said I would do it in a week… Yep. Miserably failed. But, once I broke the spine and began my reading adventure, I enjoyed every second of it.

I discovered Nina Post’s work with The Last Condo Board of the Apocalypse. Her humor and her prose made all the difference. What you read is fresh, young, full of play on words and cultural references. I must say this story made me smile with every page I turned.

A quick summary of the story:

Eric Snackerge has had a rough time lately. After being possessed by a mischievous spirit, he lost his scholarship and got blamed for a scandal that left him blacklisted from the legal profession. Now he’s working two minimum wage jobs and is desperate to show his wife and daughter that he can put his life back together — before his best-friend-turned-enemy swoops in and steals his family away.

When Eric learns about an unusual contest, he realizes that winning the grand prize will help him make his daughter’s dreams come true. But he’ll have to overcome his own self-doubt — not to mention the seemingly impossible odds — in order to achieve that goal.

However, this isn’t your run-of-the-mill sweepstakes. Everyone who eats the product develops an insatiable craving for more. Plus, the people behind the contest are dispatching everything from spy cameras to attack helicopters to make sure that Eric doesn’t get any further.

As Eric soon learns, the contest was only the first phase of a much larger plan. If the villains are successful, they will spread a dangerous supernatural pathogen throughout the food supply. But with distribution of the tainted products already underway, does Eric have what it takes to stop their plan and protect his family from being the next victims?

If you know anyone who’s feeling blue lately, hand them this book. It is guaranteed to brighten their day.

Note to Self (173) Feeling Good

New situations require adjustment. Going up the hill, climbing, sweating, panting, and finally reaching the top; it feels good to be in control. I see the big picture and I worry less about petty concerns.

I need to maintain a steady rhythm in order not to lose focus. Patience – yes – comes slowly, and I appreciate any given moment. Taking things for granted makes me sound like a narrow minded jerk. I’m no better than the bullies out there for judging the people in my circle. I know what I want and how to achieve it. The rest is only there to make the journey more interesting. Why should I settle for easy? There’s no fun in being spoon fed.

Challenges drive me further. I test my limits, dig deeper, learn how much more I can endure.

I must become wiser, and react less impulsively. I’m okay, really, so far I steered my ship pretty nicely.

So it’s all good. Yep. It’s all fine.

Note to Self (172) Choice of Life

Many thoughts, many dreams tonight ask to come true. I stand on the road alone, not looking backwards. The fear, the pain, the unbearable moments where I question everything I do, they’re just there to stall me, not help me. I must follow my instinct.

Nothing can be achieved without necessary sacrifices. I made choices. Sometimes right, sometimes wrong, but the result doesn’t change. It won’t come easy. My success depends on my perseverance and determination.

I cannot waste time with bad feelings and regrets. The world has too much to offer. So I accept the price to pay. When I think of my childhood, I never was the popular girl. I never partied, or had a boyfriend. At sixteen I even wondered if I ever would kiss a boy. I always considered myself an anomaly – but I developed my character and made my uniqueness a quality.

These current times remind me of secondary school. Bullied, ridiculed, I told the classmates who looked down on me I’d be a star someday. They laughed at me. I didn’t care. I kept going.

I’m not the only one who’s been bullied, abused, or treated badly. We are so many suffering from the overbearing ego of certain individuals who truly believe they’re better than anyone else.

I’ve looked inside a bully’s heart. Most of the time, there’s really nothing to look at. Just a bunch of excuses, self esteem issues and emotional imbalance. I fought the ones who pushed me away.

There’s the memory of these two girls playing in the public pool. I wanted to make friends but they just ignored me. I must have been eight. I’ll always remember what one of the girls said when I asked why I couldn’t play with them. And she responded: because you’re lame. Funny to say that when she didn’t know me.

I can’t use these memories to feel sorry for myself. Instead, I feed from them to become stronger and a more independent individual. Does this make me a person difficult to reach out to? I don’t think so. But I’ve built a certain defense mechanism – which makes some people wonder if I feel anything after all. Ha, the sensitive soul being accused of not knowing what love is.

But that’s the only way I know not to get hurt. And yet, I’ve still gotten hurt.

It’s okay. These times shall pass. I’ve overcome much worse.

Keep going friend. Just keep going and everything will be fine.

It has to be.
